Chatuchak Weekend Market

Navigating the world's largest weekend market — 8,000+ stalls, 27 sections, and more shopping than you can comprehend in a day.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Chatuchak (จตุจักร) — also called JJ Market — is the world's largest weekend market. Covering 35 acres (roughly the size of five football pitches), with over 8,000 stalls in 27 sections, it attracts 200,000+ visitors every weekend. It sells everything from vintage denim to fighting fish, handmade ceramics to secondhand books, plants to puppies, Buddha amulets to designer knockoffs.

It is overwhelming, exhausting, impossible to see in full, and absolutely one of Bangkok's essential experiences.

The Sections

Chatuchak is nominally organised into 27 sections by category. In practice, categories bleed into each other, and the internal map is more aspirational than accurate. Nonetheless, the broad zones:

Food & Drink

Food stalls are scattered throughout but concentrate around the southern edge (Sections 2–4) and the centre (near the clock tower). Key eating:

Pad thaiThe wok stalls along the main internal alleys

Mango sticky riceDedicated carts
Smoothies / fruit shakesEverywhere — watermelon and mango are the standards
Fried chickenThai-style: crispy, garlic-marinated, excellent
Vichuda Fried ChickenSpecific stall with cult following — Section 2 area

Mixt Chatuchak — An air-conditioned food court adjacent to the market on the MRT Kamphaeng Phet side. When the heat becomes unbearable (and it will), retreat here.

Or Tor Kor Market — Bangkok's premium fresh market is directly adjacent to Chatuchak on the north side. After browsing the market, walk through to Or Tor Kor for the finest fruits, ready-to-eat food, and cooking ingredients in Thailand. Air-conditioned eating area available.

The Clock Tower

The clock tower at the market centre is the primary landmark and meeting point. If you lose your bearings (you will), navigate back to the clock tower and reorient.

Section Numbers

Every aisle has section numbers posted on blue signs. Use these to generally locate yourself. The Chatuchak website and various apps offer maps, but the reality on the ground is chaotic.

The Strategy

  1. Enter from MRT Kamphaeng Phet — Exits 1 or 2 put you at the south side, closest to the clothing and vintage sections
  2. Go early — Arrive at 9 AM for the best selection and smallest crowds. By noon, it's packed.
  3. Walk the perimeter first — The outer aisles are wider and less claustrophobic. Get oriented before diving into the interior sois.
  4. Mark stalls — If you see something you like, buy it or take a photo of the location/section number. Finding the same stall again is nearly impossible.
  5. Stay hydrated — Chatuchak is brutally hot. There is minimal shade. Buy water frequently.
  6. Budget 3–4 hours — You cannot see the entire market in a day. Pick your priorities.

Bargaining

  • Bargaining is expected for non-food items
  • Start at 60–70% of the asking price
  • Be friendly and good-humoured — aggressive bargaining is culturally inappropriate
  • Walk away if the price doesn't suit you — the vendor may call you back
  • Not expected at food stalls — prices are fixed
  • Multiple-item purchases give you leverage — "I'll take three if you make it ___"

What Chatuchak Does Best

CategoryWhy
Vintage clothingPossibly the best vintage shopping market in Asia. Curated stalls with genuine vintage from Japan, America, and Europe — not just random secondhand.
Thai ceramicsDirect from artisans. Celadon bowls, stoneware, modern Thai pottery at a fraction of retail gallery prices.
Tropical plantsIncredible selection. Orchids, monsteras, rare aroids, Thai native plants. The plant section alone is worth a visit.
Thai fashionIndependent Thai designers sell here before (or instead of) opening retail shops. Unique pieces unavailable elsewhere.
HomewareCushion covers, wooden utensils, lacquerware, scented candles, handmade soap — Thai artisan goods at market prices.

Beyond the Weekend

  • Friday evening (6–11 PM) — Some stalls open Friday evening, particularly in the food and drink sections. Smaller crowds, more relaxed.
  • Chatuchak Green — A newer, more upscale section with cafés, restaurants, and curated retail.
  • Wednesday–Thursday — The plant market section operates midweek. Serious plant buyers come on these days.
  • JJ Mall — An air-conditioned shopping mall adjacent to Chatuchak with permanent shops selling similar goods (furniture, décor, clothing) at fixed prices. A comfortable alternative if you can't face the outdoor market.
